Mel plays several roles such as an actor, film director, producer and screenwriter. At his age of twelve, Mel shifted to Sydney, Australia with his parents and received a good foundation for his acting career as he has attended the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art.


The Academy Award-winning film Braveheart which was directed, starred, and produced by Mel in 1995, helped him a lot to become notable actor in Hollywood film industry. He received several notable awards for this performance and his name also sent on to be nominated for several other awards. Mel was given awards of Academy Award for Best Director, Academy Award for Best Picture, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Director, Golden Globe Award for Best Director, National Board of Review Special Achievement in Filmmaking, and ShoWest Award: Director of the Year

Following his successful acting career in Hollywood, Mel began to shift his profession into producing and directing films. Mel established the Icon Production Company along with his partner Bruce Davey in the year of 1989.

Apart from engaging in production or co-production of many of Mel’s own films, the Icon production Company also produced many small films, some of them are Immortal Beloved and An Ideal Husband. Mel did not limit his contribution by producing films; he also produced a number of television series. Some of his television series such as ‘biopic on The Three Stooges’ and ‘PBS documentary Carrier’ are the ideal series that have proved the standard of Mel’s work in the cinema. The Company, Icon gradually worked well and has become an international distribution company and also plays a film exhibitor the countries of Australia and New Zealand.
